A Reflection On Digital Equity
When reading through the five articles that
deal with educators understanding digital equity, I was reminded of students I
have encountered in my own life. Many students do not have access to internet
in their homes, especially in rural areas or inner-city settings. Whether it is
because of money issues or because students live too far out to get reliable internet
connection, these students should not feel left out when it comes to technology
in education. Many students also do not have their own devices, so it is
complicated to create a Bring Your Own Device classroom. I have encountered
both of these scenarios in my life between my own academic career and observing
in the public-school system. I have found that school systems will often combat
these problems by assigning students a device and allowing them time to work on
homework in the classroom that needs technology.
The article I chose to focus on was “30+
Tools for Diverse Learners.” This article is extremely helpful when considering
modifications in the classroom, providing multiple resources that incorporate
technology into the classroom. One of my favorite tools in this article is Book
Creator. Book Creator is a website that allows students to create and publish
their very own book. I feel that this resource would be a great way to modify a
lesson, as it could provide a challenge to students who would quickly finish a
written book. I also feel that this tool could be used to help students who
would struggle with the writing aspect of publishing a book. Ultimately, this
article provided an abundance of told for educators to use in the classroom,
such as Plickers, Nearpods, Audacity, and GoogleDocs.
